about

Get onstage. Make it up as you go along. Or get it going -- since that's how we began several of our sets at the Atrium Bar & Grill, circa 2002.

The music on this short collection was improvised on the spot. That is, with one exception: the vocals on the song Lariat Ass, which were brainstormed and added in the studio more recently. (I think that's the kind of thing that Frank Zappa would do with some of his live recordings: adding vocals or an additional guitar solo, at a later time.)

Back in the '90s when I played with Ham Hoc War Lox, I learned to stretch out, listen to my fellow bandmates, and then respond—or instigate—during the more spontaneous moments of our rehearsals. Freedom and discipline riding together as compadres.

True: the Gregory Ego band "jammed econo" at the Atrium. But, for me, there were some priceless moments during that time period, exercising what I like to refer to as my Duane Eddy-meets-Keith Levene style of playing (which probably isn't wholly accurate, naturally). I'm thankful that I had two musicians willing to give it a go in a live setting: Allan Bumgartner on bass and Tomás Salas on drums. (And, also, adding visual novelty: Phil's Light Show of America! You can hear the late Phil “the Fan” Hamon III speaking at the beginning—and asking the stellar question of me at the end—of "This Is A Song We've Never Played Before.")

Pay the cost of a cheap macro beer, pull up a chair or stool, and give a listen. Hell, you might be the only audience here tonight! But the room sounds great. There will be several acts at the Open Stage. There's a pool table. And Bob might even project his 8mm stag films of burlesque goddess Tempest Storm on the walls, between sets.
